1. conversation这一常用词在历史上曾有过一段有趣而出人意料的语义变化过程。早在1511年，它是作为sexual intercourse（性交）的同义语来用的。莎翁在《理查三世》（1594）一剧中就将它用于此义，Gloucester在谈到被斩了首的叛徒Hastings时说：“I mean his conversation with Shore's wife.”这一词义仍保留在始用于18世纪的法律用语criminal conversation中，此语现常缩略为crim. con.，意指“通奸”。conversation来源于拉丁语conversārī 'to keep company with, dwell in'（和……结交，生活于），因此在14世纪时conversation原义为“生活”或“生活方式”，16世纪转指“性交”，到了16世纪末逐渐向今义“会话”或“谈话”演变。
