commit (v.) - 14世纪晚期,"to give in charge, entrust",源自拉丁语committere "to unite, connect, combine; to bring together",源自com "with, together" (参看:com-) + mittere "to release, let go; send, throw" (参看:mission)。演变为现代系列含义的过程并不完全清楚。含义 "perpetrating" 是拉丁语中的古义; 在英语中始于15世纪中期。不及物用法 (代替commit oneself) 最早记录于1982,probably influenced by existentialism use (1948) of commitment to translate Sartre's engagement "emotional and moral engagement"。
